State

tearsblender Overall, I would put this into the realm of ambient music that leans more toward the psychedelic end of the spectrum. This is not the easy listening kind of psychedelic ambient though. It is too jagged, too rough around the edges to simply put it on and read a good book. This demands more from the listener than that. And it is worth it. Well done. Favorite track: Room.

about

Hal Lambert is the progeny of the intense, transcendental language of the guitar drone. This path helps extract all of the hidden potential hidden within its primary instrument, reducing the affected electric cacophony of craft and technology into an overpowering, almost metaphysical escapade. By turns devastating and rapturous, those like Lambert who truly connect with the wandering dissonance they pull from their six-string can swiftly guide these washes of abstraction away from the morass of stodgy monotony. Lambert’s solo guitar full-length State was recorded live at his home in Baton Rouge, LA, lending an almost austere yet distinctly hospitable intimacy to its three pieces. Thus the character of this environment has an unmistakeable omnipresence; the sounds of effects pedals being triggered punctuate in percussive authority under the methodically maintained din of his axe and all the sub-audible resonances of space emanate a palpable dominion over the proceedings.

The title piece ebbs with a pensive drift of condensed feedback and resonance, the at times disquieting detours just barely restrained from disruptive hostility. “Room” shares an equally raw and restless resolve, the droning swirls of minor-key debris swimming amongst broken riffs strongly harkening to the unnerving murky fidelity energy of peak Dead C and Gate. “Three Rolls” changes pace for more powerfully optimistic riffing, an almost Felt melody crushed against the sunny fuzz of Flying Saucer Attack. While State has a firm kinship with the layered, resounding solo guitar noise of Zaimph, Birchville Cat Motel, and Total, Lambert pushes his compositions towards a distinct personal space, one binding together his presumed influences into a profoundly intimate expression.

Befitting this anomalous session, State is being released in a decidedly scant edition of 32 on CD with hand-assembled packaging. But its modest publication should query no questions of its caliber; over State’s 23 minutes, Lambert leaves no doubt the he has much remarkable work forthcoming.
